Cultivate Connection - Observe Place - Return to Pono

Guided learning grounded in Hawaiian ways of knowing for ʻohana, kumu, and kaiāulu.

Māla Maoli

Learning From ʻĀina

Māla Maoli, meaning native garden spaces, is a place based learning framework guided by ʻike Hawaiʻi and living systems of the natural world. Native plants and landscapes serve as learning environments where students practice kilo, the intentional act of careful observation and a traditional way of learning. Through repeated observation and direct engagement with ʻāina, learners develop familiarity with place, time, seasonal rhythms, and ecological relationships. Māla Maoli provides a structure for schools and organizations to cultivate learning through place. The framework supports the creation and stewardship of native garden learning spaces and integrates curriculum, educator workshops, and learning tools that extend practices such as kilo and Hawaiian language into daily learning. These experiences help students build relationships with ʻāina while strengthening curiosity, reflection, and awareness of change over time. Māla Maoli is led by Samoana McAngus, an educator and curriculum designer with over a decade of classroom teaching experience and extensive work in community based education. She now works independently as an education consultant supporting culturally grounded curriculum development, program design, and place based learning initiatives across schools and organizations.
